Is Kiwa KUKreg 4 the same as WRAS?

In a nutshell, yes it is equal to WRAS in so much as it demonstrates full compliance with the UK Water Supply (water fittings) Regulations 1999.

To fully understand what this means, we need to look firstly at what the regulations are! In essence, they are there to ensure as far as possible, the safety of humans when using potable water for consumption. In England and Wales the regulation is UK Water Supply (water fittings) Regulations 1999, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own regulations. They all specify that components that make up a water system must be documented as being compliant.

In order to gain compliance and be granted certification, products must first pass

WRAS NO and NC Pressure Assisted Valve 1

British Standards 6920. This tests all nonmetallic materials in the product to ensure that if they come into contact with water intended for human consumption, they will not; omit any odors, omit any flavors, change the appearance of the water, provide an environment for microbes to grow or omit substances harmful to humans.

Once BS6920 has been granted, it is then possible to seek KiwaKUKred4 and /or WRAS approval. The testing procedure for both KUKreg 4 and WRAS are the same, making the results equal which ever one is awarded for the product. Both KUKreg 4 and WRAS are recognized by all water authorities in the UK, who will allow installation of products that can show they have certification to this effect.
Products that have been granted certification for either would normally carry an identifying quality mark. This shows the user of the product, that it has been thoroughly tested and is compliant with the UK Water Supply (water fittings) Regulations 1999.

Circling back to the question of “Is Kiwa KUKreg 4 the same as WRAS?”, it is evident that the same rigorous testing is required in order to meet the specified regulations for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. All product testing is carried out by Kiwa in their laboratories. Kiwa are ISO/IEC 17025 accredited by UKAS, RVA, Accredia.

Of the two certification schemes, WRAS is the more commonly known mostly by virtue that it has been around for a long time. That said KIWA KUKreg4 approval is fast becoming more widely acknowledged amongst plumbing professional and it demonstrates full compliance with the UK Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999. This is exactly like WRAS, and as such is considered the same as WRAS approval.
